Structure of a Writing Lesson
Writer's Talk
Teachers showcase authors with a focus on their advice for writers or their writing process. Think of this like tips and advice from the pros!
Minilesson
Whole class instruction is provided through a minilesson in which teachers model and guide students through modeling of their own writing or focusing on the writing of published authors.
Independent Writing
Write! Write! Write! Students are given time to practice what they've learned and experience the writing process. Students are given choice in their writing and encouraged to see themselves are writers. During independent writing teachers are meeting with students individually or in small groups.
Share
Reflecting on one's writing is a daily occurrence. Each day, students gather back together to discuss their writing: What decisions did they make today? How is the writing going? Share is a crucial element to this model and builds reflective writers with a strong sense of community.
